When an AI disclosure is more than good manners

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), Article 50, sets transparency obligations: people must be told when they are interacting with an AI system such as a chatbot, unless it is obvious; AI-generated synthetic audio, image, video or text must be marked in a machine-readable way by the provider; and deployers who publish AI-generated text on matters of public interest, or deepfakes, must disclose that it was artificially generated (with exceptions, such as human-reviewed text under editorial responsibility). These obligations apply from August 2, 2026.

In the US, the FTC has warned that using AI to deceive people, for example fake AI-written reviews or misleading claims about what an AI product can do, can break the FTC Act. Its 2024 rule on fake reviews and testimonials prohibits reviews that misrepresent who wrote them, including AI-generated ones.

Example lines

Article footer: "This article was drafted with the help of AI tools and reviewed and edited by [Name]."

Chatbot: "You're chatting with an AI assistant. Answers may be inaccurate; for account or legal questions, contact a person at [email]."

Images: "Image generated with AI."

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an AI disclaimer on my website?

If you use an AI chatbot or publish AI-generated media or public-interest text to people in the EU, the AI Act's Article 50 transparency duties may apply from August 2026. Elsewhere it is mostly good practice, but it also protects you: readers who know content is AI-assisted are less likely to treat errors as deliberate misinformation.

Is it really free? Do I need an account?

Yes, and no. Every generator is free with no sign-up, watermark or paywall. Your answers stay in your browser; they are never sent to our server unless you use the optional AI clause writer or policy checker.

Is a generated policy legal advice?

No. PolicyForge produces a starting template from your answers. It cannot know every detail of your business or every law that applies to you. Read the whole document, replace every [bracketed] placeholder, make sure it describes what you actually do, and have a lawyer review it if you handle sensitive data, sell to children, or operate at scale.
